5 Tips on Cleaning DVDs and CDs

5 Tips on Cleaning DVDs and CDs

Have you ever experienced a time where you frantically grab a towel and try to use it on your smudged or scratched DVDs or CDs, hoping to clean it? There's a variety of ways to tackle this very common problem and many people have advice on this topic. Some include at-home remedies (such as using household window cleaner) and others are store bought cleaning kits (I’ve used both and had success). These are just a few of my successful solutions.

TIP #1: Hold and Store Properly

Always hold DVDs & CDs by center hole & outer edge. Never touch the shiny surface. Be sure not to stack your discs together in one case or in the open air. Always store disc individually in jewel cases/sleeves.

TIP #2: Regularly do Dust Removal

If dust particles have gathered on the disc surface, use a soft microfiber cloth to remove. A paper towel, edge of your shirt, Q-Tip or towel are NOT considered a soft cloth.

TIP #3: Remove Sticky Material

If the disc surface is sticky then mix baby shampoo in lukewarm water and use a soft cloth, gently rubbing the surface. (Gently doesn’t mean scrubbing it like a stain in your carpet) Disc must be totally dry before storing it away.

TIP #4: Clean Fingerprints Correctly

If you see fingerprints on the disc surface, dip a soft cloth in alcohol and gently wipe the surface. Never use anything that is petroleum based. It will permanently damage the surface. Some others have said water but I don’t agree and it shouldn't be used alone.

TIP #5: Wipe in a Non-Radial Motion

Always wipe the disc surface in a non-radial back-and-forth motion (from the center hole to the outer edge). Don’t follow the concentric circles while cleaning. Bottom Line: Back up ALL your media just in case. Keep in mind these are suggestions and are not GUARANTEED to fully repair your disc but there has been proven success.
